Description
The City of Richmond Office of Animal Care and Control is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as an Animal Control Officer Supervisor. The Animal Control Supervisor's primary role is to oversee the daily operations of an animal control unit, ensuring the humane treatment of animals and the enforcement of animal control laws and ordinances. This involves supervising staff, managing resources, responding to public inquiries, and coordinating rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Performs other duties as assigned.
This position supervises paraprofessional and support staff to include conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Supervise and lead a team of animal control officers
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for efficient operations
- Conduct training and performance evaluations for staff
- Schedule work assignments and ensure timely completion
- Ensure the humane treatment and care of animals in custody
- Investigate animal cruelty cases and work with law enforcement
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding
This individual may be required to work weekends and holidays, as needed.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
- High School Diploma or GED
- 5 years of law enforcement/emergency response/animal control experience including supervisory and training
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Acquire a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions; frequently see and crawl; and occasionally climb. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
