The City of Richmond, Office of the City Attorney, is seeking to fill an Assistant City Attorney position for its Human Services Division.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advising and representing the Department of Social Services in legal matters pertaining to abused, neglected, and at-risk children, primarily in courts not of record.
  • Undertaking representation of the Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Justice Services, and other assignments as necessary.
  • Protecting the legal interests of the City of Richmond and providing legal services, representation, and advice to City officials, employees, and departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in family, juvenile, or social services law.
  • Minimum of four years of experience (preferred, not required).
  • Membership with the Virginia State Bar.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply legal analysis in solving technical, administrative, and legal issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Duties Include, but are not Limited to:

  • Protecting the legal interests of the City of Richmond and providing legal services and representation to City officials, employees, and departments.
  • Reviewing legal matters, providing counsel, and initiating or responding to legal actions.
  • Researching legal issues, negotiating, drafting transactional documents, and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations.

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Juris Doctor degree.
  • Four (4) years of experience preferred.
  • Admission to the Virginia Bar.
  • Licensed to practice law in Virginia.
  • Twelve hours of continuing legal education annually.

Environmental Hazards and Physical Requirements:

  • Working conditions may include exposure to travel, hazardous physical conditions, atmospheric conditions, intense noise, and environmental hazards.
  • Physical requirements include performing detailed work on multiple tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraints.
