The City of Richmond is seeking an Assistant City Attorney in the civil litigation division primarily to assist the City's police department and handle cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts. The position will also undertake other assignments as needed. The successful candidate must be a member of the Virginia State Bar.
Responsibilities
- Protecting the legal interests of the City of Richmond
- Providing legal services, representation, and advice to City officials, employees, and departments
- Reviewing legal matters and providing appropriate counsel
- Initiating or responding to legal actions
- Working within a general outline of work to be performed
- Developing work methods and sequences under general supervision
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree
- Up to four years of progressively responsible legal experience
Licensing, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements
- Admission to the Virginia Bar
- Licensed to practice law in Virginia
- Independent admission to the bars of individual courts as necessary (e.g., United States District Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, etc.)
- Twelve hours of continuing legal education annually
- Compliance with additional requirements established by the City of Richmond
Note: An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
