The disAbility Law Center of Virginia is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of staff attorney or senior staff attorney to advocate on behalf of children and adults with disabilities. The disAbility Law Center of Virginia is the state’s designated protection and advocacy system. Our mission is to protect and advance legal, human, and civil rights of persons with disabilities; combat and prevent abuse, neglect, and discrimination; and promote independence, choice, and self-determination by persons with disabilities.

Required Qualifications
Duties for this position will include developing and leading systemic disability rights reform efforts, individual representation of clients in formal and informal legal and administrative proceedings, and conducting and supervising investigations of abuse and neglect. Attorneys of all levels of experience will have the opportunity to appear in administrative and court proceedings. Experience in legal issues relating to children, and especially education of children with disabilities is preferred but not required. In addition, the ideal candidate will:
- Be licensed and in good standing to practice law in the state of Virginia.
- Have the ability to assist with or supervise litigation in administrative proceedings and in state and federal courts.
- Have experience in disability law or civil rights.
- Have familiarity with the disability services system in Virginia.
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrate sensitivity for people with disabilities and respect for cultural differences.
- Be passionate about promoting and advocating for independence, informed choice, and self-determination for people with disabilities, with a commitment to community integration and to social justice.
A candidate for senior staff attorney will have demonstrated leadership experience, particularly leadership of complex programs or projects, a minimum of five years of legal experience in an organization similar to dLCV, and be able to serve as a mentor to less experienced staff. dLCV requires all staff to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus unless the staff has a valid medical or religious exemption. This position will also be required to apply for a national security clearance in support of several programs.
Salary
Salary for an attorney will little experience begins at $48,500. Starting salary increases significantly commensurate with experience.
