Description
The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Bridge Maintenance Specialist with the Bridge Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for repairs and maintenance of bridges, culverts, guardrails, and related structures. Work may also include duties related to emergency operations such as the snow program and storm operations. This position provides support to the bridge maintenance crew to ensure work is performed to federal and state standards.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Performing maintenance and repairs to bridge decks, guardrail, bridge rail, culverts, expansion joints, abutments, piers, and similar structures.
- Operating heavy equipment such as back hoes, front end loaders, man lifts, and other similar equipment.
- Forming, pouring, and finishing structural concrete, and other types and mixtures associated with bridge maintenance and repairs.
- Assisting with major traffic flow plans to include placing signs, barricades, and other traffic control equipment.
- Conducting daily safety inspections of equipment and work tools
- Ensuring all bridges, culverts and headwalls are free and clear from vegetation and environmental debris.
- Responding to emergency situations to trouble shoot and implement immediate repairs or modifications to ensure public safety.
- Properly and safely operates a variety of power and hand tools such as compressors, chainsaws, water blasting equipment, jackhammers, portable generators, small gas and electric tools and other related tools to achieve daily tasks.
- Accurately use various tools of layout such as tape measure, levels etc.
- Climb, move, and work at heights up to 100ft on and under bridges, in and around waterways and on slopes and inclines.
- Lift, carry and handle equipment, tools, supplies and other materials up to 100 lbs. in weight.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to work in adverse weather condition
- Ability to work on uneven surfaces
- Three years of experience directly related to duties of this position
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- Basic knowledge of math and calculations in relation to a jobsite such as measurements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of various trades associated with construction or bridge maintenance
- Proficient in operating power tools
- Safe daily operation of city vehicles
- Complete and process appropriate paperwork
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Experience with 2-way radios
- Experience in customer service, interacting with citizens and leadership
- Ability to analyze information quickly and effectively
- Exhibit dependability
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Some assignments require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License Class B or ability to obtain within 11 months from hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, pull, finger, talk, see, hear and use repetitive motion; frequently feel, grasp, finger and see; frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
