Description
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified and motivated professional with specialized cemetery abilities to assist with the day-to-day operations of the City of Richmond’s cemeteries. This position reports to the Cemeteries Program and Operations Manager. The candidate is responsible for supervising and maintaining and upkeeping the cemetery; providing direct customer service to visitors, customers, and cemetery property owners; and coordinating cemetery services with funeral homes, monument companies, and vault vendors.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Supervising and training employees in the maintenance and upkeep of grounds, finding, marking off, and digging graves
- Approving payroll, and time and attendance
- Conducting performance evaluations; counseling employees when necessary and recommending corrective action
- Maintaining records of burials and lot sales; preparing invoices for funeral homes and monument dealers
- Assisting the public in locating graves and escorting to location, assisting with public genealogy
- Ordering supplies for cemeteries
- Addressing resolving escalated complaints or problems from internal or external customers
- Ensuring staff is following proper equipment operation safety procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- One year of college or technical training
- Two years of experience in cemeteries management and facility maintenance
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, reach, finger, grasp, talk, see, hear, see and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, or fingers; and occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, and feel. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
