The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Construction Inspector, Principal within the Paving Division. The incumbent will primarily be responsible for inspecting traffic signal installations within the city and may also serve as lead workers, overseeing work assignments and monitoring completion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting detailed inspections related to the City’s Paving program, including utility adjustments and ADA handicap ramp compliance
- Interpreting plans and design specifications to ensure project compliance with City and VDOT standards
- Reviewing materials for projects, identifying faulty materials and workmanship, and documenting compliance
- Tracking progress of construction projects, calculating material quantities, and maintaining project files
- Ensuring proper placement and maintenance of traffic devices and compliance with safety practices
- Demonstrating advanced knowledge of inspection activities, including VDOT certifications in asphalt and concrete
Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses
Minimum Training and Experience:
- Associate's Degree in engineering technology, construction management, or business management
- Five years of construction inspection, land development, or contractor operations experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience as approved by the department
Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record within 30 days of hire
- Virginia Department of Transportation certifications in Soils, Asphalt, Concrete, Aggregates, and Pavement Markings
- Operator Qualification for all gas-related tasks, as assigned
Preferred Training and Experience:
- VDOT certifications in Concrete, Asphalt field 1 & 2 or within 6 months of employment
- Experience and certification in Work Zone Safety
Environmental Hazards:
- Exposure to various physical and environmental hazards such as hazardous conditions, atmospheric conditions, and intense noise
Physical Requirements and Working Environment:
- Ability to perform detailed work on multiple tasks under time constraints
- Regularly required to balance, climb, crouch, finger, talk, see, hear, and use substantial repetitive motions
- Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, and exerting up to 20 pounds of force
