The Peace Operations Training Institute (POTI) is a non-profit organization based in Virginia that develops and distributes online training material for peace operations personnel and humanitarian relief workers worldwide. POTI is based in Williamsburg, VA but staff work remotely.
We are seeking an experienced Copy Editor to provide support to the Content Department in ensuring the soundness of grammar, clarity of language, and richness of the learning experience.
This is a full-time position, and residence in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
The ideal applicant will have experience copy editing at the professional level and possess a demonstrated interest in international peace and security and the United Nations. A combination of education and experience will also be considered. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, self-motivated, dependable, flexible, comfortable taking direction, able to work at a high volume when necessary, and have a punctual and professional mindset. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is also highly valued.

Responsibilities
- Editing and proofreading a wide variety of materials according to the POTI Editorial Style Guide, including course texts in English and other languages, publicity materials, grant-related documentation, internal reports, etc.
- Editing materials to a high standard and with attention to detail for grammar, clarity, punctuation, spelling, correct usage, elimination of passive voice, accuracy, clarity, organization, and consistency.
- Formatting course texts in Adobe InDesign for both web and print release.
- Creating graphic elements for courses and other materials, including through curating photos from UN Photo and like sources and creating unique charts, infographics, etc.
- Vetting sources for course materials, checking facts, and identifying plagiarism.
- Maintaining standards of citation.
- Working with other staff members to draft, design, and edit institutional newsletters and other publicity materials.
- Coordinating with colleagues to implement edits and maintain the accuracy of all courses.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in English, Journalism, Foreign Affairs, or a relevant field.
- Impeccable copy editing and proofreading abilities.
- Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Interest in the UN and global development communities, especially regarding innovation in education, communication, and technology.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and research skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Self-motivated with proven problem-solving skills.
- Flexible and able to react positively to challenges.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines when needed.
Preferred skills
- Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
- Experience with interactive e-learning software, such as Adobe Captivate or Rapacity.
- Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, or the ability to quickly learn a new editing style.
- Reading comprehension of a foreign language, preferably French or Spanish.
- Experience creating eBooks and EPUBs.
- Knowledge of and experience in graphic design is an asset.
- Experience drafting and editing content for social media.
