The Curriculum Writer (Grants) will serve as a key member of the CodeVA’s Curriculum Team, providing crucial curriculum writing for grant-funded products and courses. They will have a deep understanding of computer science concepts, trends, and educational practices at the state and national level. They will have the ability to shape learning products/courses based on grant priorities and be able to communicate complex concepts in a clear, concise, and engaging manner.
Job Responsibilities
- Create and design curriculum products that meet the needs of CodeVA’s grant-funded computer science education programs.
- Work with team members to design curriculum, including lesson plans, assessments, coursework, and other supporting educational materials.
- Maintain a transparent project timeline for individual curriculum writing work and communicate about barriers and needs to the curriculum writing team and/or supervisor.
- Review, edit, and create supporting educational content, such as videos, workbooks, slide decks, and other session presentation materials to support grant implementation.
- Ensure that created content aligns with the Virginia state Standards of Learning (SOLs), national standards, and other designated lesson design frameworks.
- Collaborate with team members on writing projects, including other writers, instructional designers, program managers, curriculum leads, and members of the facilitation team to ensure the successful alignment and use of curriculum products.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, techniques, and research related to K-12 computer science education, designated grant topics, and the process of curriculum writing.
- Respond to research and reports related to created curriculum’s effectiveness within the designated project(s) and make necessary revisions as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and/or curriculum lead.
- Attend grant-focused meetings when requested by the PI team and give updates on product timeline and content.
- Maintain detailed records about modifications/additions/removal of learning elements from curriculum products.
- Design curriculum toward program goals, objectives, and assessments, as well as ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
- Attend or view recorded sessions as assigned by the program manager and/or Director of Curriculum.
- Collaborate with other curriculum team members to provide curriculum writing reports, summaries, and other documentation to grant partners and funders to ensure continued funding and compliance.
- Ensure that all project materials and activities include appropriate recognition of Federal funding entities as specified in the funding agreement.
- Maintain updated research, ethics, and compliance training and certification if deemed necessary by the Director of Curriculum.
Working as a member of the CodeVA Team:
- Stay current with all modes of communication, such as email, phone, and other accepted forms of messaging.
- Maintain a calendar and attend all meetings pertinent to being a CodeVA curriculum writer, working on cross-departmental teams, and as a member of the larger organization.
- Occasionally coordinate travel arrangements, including transportation and accommodations, and provide invoices and initiate reimbursement for expenses related to travel within a timely manner.
- Help prepare presentation materials and polish work for publication using CodeVA standards for public-facing products.
- Organize and maintain files and data in alignment with CodeVA’s privacy policy and needs as a grant-funded organization.
- Manage daily workflow and prioritize work based on deadlines and deliverables.
- Serve on assigned working groups, committees, and impact teams as assigned by the Executive Director and Director of Curriculum.
- Complete other clerical and administrative tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in Education or a related field OR similar work experience.
- 3+ years of experience teaching in a K-12th grade educational setting.
- Programming ability in a text-based language (such as Java, JavaScript, Python) and a strong working knowledge of object-oriented programming is preferred.
- Previous writing experience specific to education including development of curriculum products, copyediting skills, and writing curriculum for adult learners that is centered on learner needs and experiences.
- Familiarity with public educational systems and computer science-related resources and trends in Virginia.
- Experience with leading professional development and/or presenting at conferences is preferred.
- Familiarity with using data and reports to make decisions about curriculum product design and focus.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout Virginia for necessary in-person grant events and curriculum team events.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
