The Development Manager plays a key role in ensuring that NAMI Virginia has the funding necessary to sustain its mission of support, education, and advocacy. This position is responsible for creating and implementing a NAMI Virginia development plan. Overall, the position is charged with continuously growing the organization’s financial ability to meet and exceed its mission and vision in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board of Managers’ Fundraising and Development Committee.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with the Executive Director, board committees, staff, and partners to implement the organization’s development plan.
- Evaluates, designs, and implements fundraising programs.
- Handles tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Management of staff.
- Identifies and cultivates donors and sponsors.
- Maintains contact with corporate sponsors and major donors.
- Cultivates new contacts.
- Promotes planned giving opportunities.
- Works with staff to identify foundation and other grant funding.
- Writes and submits grant proposals, grant reports, LOA’s, and handles other requirements for grant seeking and grants obtained.
- Develops an annual grant calendar based on ‘open grant’ submission and reporting periods.
- Handles NAMIWalks duties and ensures all functions of the NAMIWalks event are carried out.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates NAMI Virginia’s annual giving programs, as well as ensures the future viability of the organization planned giving activities.
- Manages applications to Community Health Charities, Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, Walgreens, Walmart, and other local, state, corporate, and federal employee, or other giving campaigns. Responsible for managing communication with these entities.
- Oversight of the production and distribution of the Annual Report.
Communications and Marketing
- Works with staff to develop and implement development social media strategy.
- Provides specific reports as requested to the Executive Director.
- Supervises communications and affiliate relations staff.
- Oversight of all external communications and communication systems.
- Develops and implements community outreach strategy.
- Manages NAMI Virginia’s fundraising dashboard and donor database.
- Works with the Finance Manager to issue reports as a check-and-balance measure, and as a means of communicating donor activity to the Executive Director monthly.
- Oversees acknowledgements to all donors, new members, and all those who have had an honorarium made in their honor, memorials, etc. within a 10-day timeframe of donation receipt.
Miscellaneous/other requirements
- Miscellaneous tasks and projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities. Occasional travel required.
- Manages NAMI Virginia’s membership base and develops and implements plans to increase membership.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Social Media platforms, CANVA, Constant Contact, and fundraising databases.
- Must use a strengths-based approach and strive to empower and instill hope in others.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work towards defined goals and contract requirements.
- Self-starter with initiative that can work independently and be part of team effort.
- Ability to relate and interact well with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational skills. Must be able to focus on multiple projects yet still maintain attention to detail and consistently meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to strategically plan as well as develop action plans and execute.
- Solid computer skills required.
- A warm, friendly, and customer-service oriented demeanor.
- Team player with the ability to build partnerships and manage group initiatives.
- 1-2 years’ experience in grant writing, management, and reporting.
- 1-2 years’ experience in event planning and logistics, volunteer coordination, and identification of event funders.
- 1-2 years’ experience in managing grant budgets and in research to identify foundation, corporate, government, and other funders.
- 1-2 years’ supervisory experience.
- 1-2 years’ experience working with government grants and budgets.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Public Administration, or similar area required unless life/work experience can highlight similar training; a Masters degree is preferred.
