Join a highly accomplished team in a city dedicated to growing arts and culture as the Director of Advancement & Leadership Giving and help raise the funds to realize the power of music and music education in the Richmond region. One of the only orchestras to continue playing to both live and virtual audiences throughout the pandemic, the Richmond Symphony has purposely worked to reimagine the music experience for ways to connect more deeply with the Richmond community, and to bring the power and enrichment of music to participants of all ages, regardless of their prior knowledge of or interest in classical music or traditional symphony performance.

As the Director of Advancement and Leadership Giving, your primary goal will be to ensure the resources to allow the Symphony to realize our artistic, educational and community-focused goals. Your team manages an annual goal of just more than $5 Million – through active communication, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. This position provides leadership across the organization and represents the Symphony within the community, building relationships and making connections.

What exactly would I do?

Your day could be spent managing your team, meeting with a current supporter or new prospect, creating or implementing multi-year monetary goals, building out a moves management process, establishing reporting practices, collaborating with the Donor Relations Director for the Richmond Symphony Foundation on planned giving or endowment campaigns, or forecasting departmental revenue and expenses. Evenings may find you attending a concert with your team members, hosting a fundraising or stewardship event, or cultivating a potential donor. Maintaining a close and positive relationship with all constituencies of the Symphony is an integral part of all that you do.

    Required Qualifications
    • A commitment to our core values of welcoming, passion, innovation, inclusivity and quality is required.
    • Five to ten years of having a positive impact on strategic fundraising with a focus on major individual gifts is also essential.
    • Experience in the performing arts sector and/or a specialized knowledge of Richmond area donors and funders is highly desirable.
    • We are seeking an individual committed to learning, with the ability to accomplish departmental and organizational goals, and someone who is comfortable handling complex budgets, expense controls, cash flow and financial forecasting.
