NextUp RVA (“NextUp”) is a fast-paced, innovative, and data-driven non-profit organization powered by a network of providers and leaders with a common commitment to ensuring youth have access to quality learning opportunities beyond the classroom. NextUp is dedicated to making out-of-school time and high-quality expanded-learning programs more accessible for youth, especially middle-school-aged youth. We do this by coordinating efforts and resources, knitting programs together into a cohesive system, helping individual programs function at a high level, and pushing the system to provide the greatest benefit to as many young people as possible. NextUp provides its partners with centralized registration and outreach, a shared data measurement system, and sponsored professional development.
The Director of Data Systems and Analytics is responsible for all aspects of NextUp RVA’s shared measurement system and program impact analysis, including the database, security, hardware and/or software; managing the user experience and access to data; leading data analysis for continuous improvement and tracking performance measures and outcomes; designing and programming of queries, reports, and other data access tools; managing the appropriate transfer of data across systems; managing data quality control; and providing technical support and training to NextUp’s internal and external users.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages all aspects of NextUp’s shared measurement system, which includes the implementation of NextUp’s cloud-based Management Information System (MIS) and the gathering, managing, and using of system, program, and student data across NextUp’s entire portfolio of sites.
- Directs NextUp’s quality improvement and professional development services including contracts with YPQI and potential other professional development providers.
- Serves as the central point of coordination and quality control for numerous sources of data, including the MIS, data generated by NextUp in-house, confidential student data, and data from local and national research and evaluation partners.
- Organizes, documents, implements, and enforces accurate data collection and management policies and procedures.
- Ensures all policies and procedures are compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
- Establishes data collection quality standards, trains users on collection methods, troubleshoots for solutions in all data-related problem areas and ensures data quality control.
- Analyzes and presents data from existing sources in order to measure performance and impact, recommend pathways for improvement, improve operational procedures, additional investment and collaboration, and may also identify new ways to generate, collect, and analyze data to various audiences including the NextUp Board of Directors, program partners, public school administrations, government groups, local and national funders, and national networks.
- Develops methodologies for measuring performance and impact relevant to each project.
- Generates new data sets as appropriate to capture relevant indicators of service or performance across multiple organizations.
- Prepares regular and special reports that succinctly and effectively translate data and analysis into customer-appropriate deliverables such as grant reports, program provider performance reports, executive summaries, white papers, briefs, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel charts, spreadsheets and dashboards.
- Sets annual metrics and targets and reports outcomes to funders and schools.
- Prepares and executes professional development workshops for providers.
- Provides leadership to various city and school committees and workgroups as the NextUp representative.
- Helps people from various sectors understand the story told by the data gathered and analyzed.
- Supports EVP and CEO with annual planning as well as strategic planning.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred (Research, Evaluation Methods, Data Analysis or Decision Analytics)
- 5+ years of demonstrated experience in collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data and presenting it in a compelling way; proactive and responsive, with a strong customer orientation; demonstrated technology skills and research abilities
- Extensive knowledge of data management, reporting and visualization tools (Excel, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Business Objects)
- Excellent mathematical abilities and organizational skills; exhibits superior presentation skills and ability to explain complex processes to others
- Demonstrates excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and pays close attention to detail; some experience in public education, public service provision, or out-of-school time programming is preferred.
