If selected for next steps, the City of Richmond will be conducting interviews and same day hiring on October 28th from 9:00am - 3:00pm, at Main Street Station located at:
1500 East Main Street, Richmond, VA 23219.
 



The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities, is seeking a qualified Equipment Operator, Principal. The incumbent will spend majority of their time operating commercial vehicles: excavating using heavy equipment, driving dump trucks, with trailer and performing some manual labor. This function will work predominately with storm water infrastructure but will assist other department/division as needed. The position required some independent work on the jobsite. In addition, they will operate hydraulic, pneumatic, and power hand tools. Use general hand tools (rakes & shovels) for manual labor. Serve as Flagger while working in the roadway. Assist with emergency maintenance programs related to weather: hurricane, rain, snow and tornadoes. Candidate will work in adverse weather conditions, confine spaces, easement, near waterways, off heights and perform heavy lifting.

 

Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Operating Heavy equipment: Backhoe, Trackhoe, Gradall Grader, Bobcat, Front End Loader
  • Installing shielding box in trenches and working in confine space
  • Driving Commercial vehicles with trailers: Dump Truck, Single Axle & Dual Axle. 
  • Performing manual labor to include serving a Flagger in the roadway. 
  • Cutting vegetation with heavy equipment and zero turn mower.
  • Cleaning and maintenance equipment. 
  • Cleaning up spills & other basin cleaning tasks. 
  • Using laser level to find elevation and installed pipe. 

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience at the Equipment Operator, Senior level
  • Training in equipment used at this level of assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements in accordance with Division of Motor Vehicle regulations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • DOT CDL Class A with (N) Tanker Endorsement drivers license for motor vehicles. (5 or more years)
  • OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 Card
  • Work in construction field and /or maintenance operation field. (5-10 years)
  • Experience working successfully with a crew / team on the daily basis. (5-10 years)

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly finger and see; frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
