Position Summary: As an Electrician with the Facilities Management Division, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the proper operation of electrical systems within the City of Richmond. Your responsibilities will include the installation and maintenance of various electrical equipment, such as lighting, motors, generators, controls, conduits, wiring, high voltage switch gears, telemetering equipment, and substations. Your work may also involve tasks like maintaining and troubleshooting emergency generators, motors, HVAC, and lighting equipment, designing electrical systems, and more. Safety is a top priority, and you'll be expected to follow all safety rules and regulations in your role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install and maintain electrical equipment, including circuits, lighting, motors, conduits, wiring, high voltage switch gears, and telemetering equipment.
- Perform inspections of fire alarms and sprinkler equipment as assigned.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks, including preventative maintenance work.
- Read blueprints, schematics, sketches, and code books, and design electrical systems for power and lighting.
- Complete administrative duties such as requesting pricing for parts and materials, updating the database management system, and maintaining records of work orders.
- Assist other trades in tasks like lock-out and tag-out for equipment safety.
- Be prepared to work beyond scheduled hours, during inclement weather, and during declared emergencies as an essential personnel member.
Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).
- Understanding of electrical theory, including Kerchef's law, Ohm's law, etc.
- Familiarity with electrical and mechanical equipment/systems.
- Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
- Proficiency in using the CMMS system or a similar work task logging system.
- Strong mathematical skills, including geometric and algebraic formulas.
- Skill in using applicable safety standards and protocols, including PPE, NEC, and NFLPA.
- Ability to properly use standard hand and electrical tools.
- Proficiency in using database management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems and components for safe and proper operation.
- Safe operation of power and hand tools.
- Strong reading and listening comprehension skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in performing mathematical calculations, including algebraic and geometric operations used in the electrical field.
Minimum Training and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED or specialized vocational training.
- Four (4) years of electrician experience.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
Preferred Training and Experience:
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:
- Current and valid Journeyman Electrician certification required.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire.
- Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
