Description

 

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Equipment Operator in the Ground Maintenance Division. The incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment and performing a variety of associated maintenance tasks.

 

**City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who perform duties in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work during times of emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather.**

 

Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Operating light and specialized heavy equipment to include forklifts, compressors, sign installers, paint eradicators, paint applicators, and other similar equipment 
  • Maintaining equipment, machinery, or vehicles in good working order 
  • Ensuring safe operation and storage of equipment 
  • Performing routine maintenance and reporting damaged or unsafe equipment 
  • Preparing materials for installation and/or use and assembling supplies and equipment 
  • Monitoring or assisting in monitoring inventory of supplies and equipment 
  • Processing routine documents and forms, work orders, repair requests, reports, and logs 
  • Setting up safe work zones using proper traffic control devices 
  • Reviewing work orders, route lists, maps, charts and/or blueprints 
  • Removing debris, litter, graffiti from signs, or pavement; loading material into trucks, calling in location tickets; setting poles; clearing signs, and cutting small tree limbs, or vegetation that may impede proper sight distances of traffic control devices
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

 

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six (6) months of experience operating equipment related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.  Depending upon department and position, some positions are permitted up to six months after hire to obtain this license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • Basic math
  • Chemicals and chemical reactions
  • Specific knowledge related to area of responsibility such as paint applications, paint removal, application of dry wall, playground safety, playground inspections, etc.
  • Usage of various tools and equipment
  • Safety rules regarding the  operation of various equipment and tools
  • Various plants and fauna for safety reasons

 

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Breaking down and rebuilding equipment
  • Cleaning an area of responsibility
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments
  • Conducting snow removal
  • Performing minor repairs and replacing damaged equipment
  • Reading a tape measure and a diagram
  • Reading and writing
  • Setting up and assisting with special events
  • Operating light trucks
  • Operating heavy equipment such as bobcats or zero turn mowers
  • Operating light equipment and tools such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes, and brooms

 

Abilities (some combination of the following):

  • Follow standard procedures and established practices
  • Be patient
  • Work with others, including in a strenuous work environment
  • Problem solve

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
