The Executive Director is responsible to the Foundation Board of Directors fulfilling the organization’s mission, guiding the recently completed strategic plan, and provides day-to-day operational support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures that the Board of Directors is kept fully informed on the conditions and operations of the organization, and on all factors influencing their outcome. Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and any other board committees.
- Develops short- and long-range goals, operating plans, policies and objectives, that further the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Plans, organizes, and directs (directly or through delegation to others) programs, events, and services; evaluates results and recommends policies, procedures, and action to achieve program goals.
- Maintains open channels of communication and facilitates interaction between the organization and all its constituencies.
- Carries out such other general responsibilities as may be delegated by the Board of Directors.
- Directs and coordinates all programs, projects, events, and major activities.
- Plans and oversees all private functions held on the site.
- Monitors the site, villa, and all outbuildings to assure appropriate maintenance and repairs are maintained.
- Provides site access and tours as requested by groups and individuals.
- Maintains and organizes all electronic and physical files, reports, surveys, and research documents.
- Records minutes of board meetings.
- Ensures that all funds, physical assets, and other property are safeguarded and administered.
- Ensures the annual 990 return is accurate, approved by the board, and submitted to the IRS.
- Develops and implements annual giving, program, and capital fundraising strategies.
- Creates and managers other funding sources such as event sponsors and ticket sales and facility/site rentals.
- Designs and implements marketing and public relations programs.
- Establishes and maintains education programs in order to educate and inform the public.
- Develops and sustains working relationships with other local, state, and national organizations that focus on historical preservation and education.
Administrative Duties
- Negotiates, coordinates, and manages all contractors and freelance professionals to include wedding and event planners.
Management and Development of Financial Resources
- Develops and operates within an annual budget maintaining fiscal solvency.
Communications, Marketing and Public Relations
- Serves as a primary spokesperson to the public.
Qualifications
- Maintain existing and develop new funding opportunities, including external grants and contracts and income generating initiatives.
- Communicate clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Travel as required representing the organization.
- Effectively use technology in the conduct of daily business.
- Think strategically and solve problems.
- Delegate responsibility to and lead volunteers and contractors.
- Balance multiple demands, prioritize tasks, and retain clear focus while maintaining a sense of humor.
- Facilitate collaborative and cooperative working relationships.
- Bachelor's degree, ideally in the areas of business, nonprofit management, or another related field.
- 5 to 10 years of demonstrated responsible leadership and management experience in the nonprofit sector.
- Demonstrated ability and success in nonprofit fund development with individuals, corporations, and foundations.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in historic preservation or history education.
