The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is seeking qualified Virginia (VA) Certified Fire Fighters to fill multiple full-time Fire Fighter vacancies. Job Description:

  • Provide fire suppression, emergency medical, and other emergency and non-emergency services.
  • Attend the City of Richmond's Fire Training Academy for up to a 6-week period.
  • Perform emergency firefighting and medical services.
  • Ensure fire stations and equipment are continually ready.
  • Work according to set procedures under direct supervision.
  • Provide various emergency services such as fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous material response, technical and water rescues, inspections, community activities, and more.
  • May assist in training other employees.

Supervision:

  • Exercised: Typically does not supervise other employees.
  • Received: Typically reports to a Lieutenant or Captain.

Duties Include (but not limited to):

  • Responding to various emergencies like fire alarms, medical services, hazardous materials incidents, and natural or man-made disasters.
  • Driving and operating emergency vehicles and apparatus.
  • Conducting inspections and participating in fire safety education and community outreach.
  • Performing general maintenance at the fire station and equipment.
  • Completing forms and preparing reports.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • At least one year of consecutive sworn firefighting experience with a paid career municipal Fire Department (excluding time in the Recruit Academy).
  • Current Virginia (VA) EMT certification.
  • Various certifications including Firefighter I & II, Hazmat Awareness & Operations, CPR, ICS700 & ICS800, and ICS100 & ICS200.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid Virginia (VA) driver's license or obtainable within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of evaluations: NFPA 1582 Medical Examination, Psychological Test, Drug Test, and Criminal Background Check.
  • Applicants must receive vaccines against various diseases or provide proof of immunization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (a representative sample):

  • Basic mechanical aptitude, mathematics, and science.
  • CPR skills, fire suppression strategies, EMT-B knowledge.
  • Operating fire department equipment, first aid, and emergency medicine.
  • Reading, comprehension, problem-solving, teamwork, and mental alertness.

Environmental Hazards and Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to hazardous materials, extreme conditions, and physical demands requiring strength and stamina.
