Description
The Department of General Services is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Fleet Maintenance Specialist Senior in the Fleet Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for completing mechanical repairs and maintenance on City vehicles to include, but not limited to light, heavy duty, and off-road equipment as well as fire apparatuses, light and heavy duty associated equipment, and Emergency Vehicle Transportation (EVT) equipment.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Performing general inspections on vehicles and equipment and documenting discrepancies
- Repairing and replacing vehicle parts such as engines, alternators, carburetors, batteries, tires, brakes, pumps, transmissions, gas tanks, headlights, wipers, fuel systems, suspensions, and other similar equipment
- Performing routine preventive maintenance on vehicles such as oil changes, filter changes and lubrication, and other routine maintenance
- Assisting in the training and mentoring of junior technicians in proper diagnosing and repair techniques
- Making service calls and repairs to vehicles and equipment in the field
- Consulting technical reference documentation such as manufacturer and parts manuals for technical information necessary for repairs
- Preparing files, maintaining work logs and maintenance sheets
- Conducting state inspections and preventive maintenance inspections
- Logging time and information into computer database on a daily basis
- Repairing and troubleshooting hydraulic systems
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Four (4) years of automotive maintenance experience related to assignment with two (2) years of experience in heavy truck and off road equipment
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record within 30 days of hire
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record within 6 months of hire
- Virginia State Motor Vehicle Inspection License within 12 months of hire
Knowledge (some combination of the following):
- Automotive and mechanical principles and theory, including fuel systems
- Fire equipment
- Familiarity with heavy and off-road equipment, light vehicles, hydraulics, etc.
- Shop safety principles and standards
- Diagnostic tools and equipment
Skills (some combination of the following):
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Database entry and management
- Technical troubleshooting (electrical, automotive, etc.)
- Oral and written communication
- Customer service
- Using standard automotive hand tools/equipment
Abilities (some combination of the following):
- Identify and understand automotive terminology
- Read and understand manuals, specifications, etc.
- Follow oral and written instructions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, push, pull, lift, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms, talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, walk, feel and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
