The Senior Autopsy Tech provides support services to Anatomic Pathology by serving as the Senior Gross Room Assistant and Autopsy Assistant. This role involves performing specific tasks and duties under the direction and supervision of Pathologists or Pathologist Assistants. The Senior Autopsy Tech is responsible for assisting in training, scheduling, and assigning duties appropriate to each Specimen Processor and Gross Room Tech. Initiative and good judgment are demonstrated by identifying and solving problems to ensure quality decisions in leading the staff in their primary area of responsibility. Moreover, this position assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection. Maintaining procedure manuals, monitoring inventory, and maintaining assigned logs are also key responsibilities.
Requirements:
- Licensure, Certification, or Registration: Not Applicable for Hire or Continued Employment.
- Experience Required:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a hospital or medical examiner’s office.
- Previous laboratory work experience or experience with biohazard procedures and precautions.
- Experience with histological techniques including slide preparation and staining.
- Experience Preferred: Previous work experience in autopsy services.
- Education/Training Required: Associates Degree in Chemical, Biological, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
- Education/Training Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Science from an accredited program. Training in mortuary science and Anatomic Pathology.
- Independent Actions Required:
- Adherence to all policies and procedures, especially safety and patient confidentiality regulations.
- Performing data entry in Laboratory Information System.
- Performing autopsy techniques.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Not Applicable.
- Additional Position Requirements: Alternating responsibilities monthly with Fellow AP Assistant and Pathologists’ Assistants.

- Physical Lifting 50-100 lbs.
- Activities: Prolonged standing, Frequent bending, Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
- Mental/Sensory Skills Required: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem-solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking.
- Emotional Skills Required: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple priorities, engage in frequent and intense customer interactions, adapt to frequent changes, and work in a noisy environment.
