The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a skilled HVAC Mechanic for its Facilities Management Division. The incumbent's primary responsibilities include cleaning, performing preventive maintenance, and conducting inspections on HVAC & Refrigeration equipment. The role involves troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and replacing HVAC & refrigeration equipment. Additionally, the position responds to environmental comfort calls and completes work orders. Work hours are typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with potential for overtime and weekend work as needed.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance checks and inspections on HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and replace HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Complete administrative duties such as preparing work orders, data entry, purchasing materials, and contacting vendors.
  • Assist in troubleshooting, developing, and building test equipment as assigned.
  • Respond to emergencies and major weather events as essential personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Proficiency in HVAC, basic electrical knowledge, mechanics, safety procedures, troubleshooting, computer skills (including data entry), and reading installation instructions.
  • Minimum Training and Experience: High School Diploma or GED, one year of vocational/technical training in HVAC systems/refrigeration, and two years of HVAC experience. Equivalent training and experience may be considered.
  • Preferred Training and Experience: Journeyman's HVAC Certification is preferred.
  • Licensing, Certifications, and Special Requirements: Valid chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) certification from the EPA, valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire.
