The Virginia Education Association (VEA) is seeking applicants for the position of Information System Specialist (ISS). VEA is a statewide community of almost 40,000 teachers and school support professionals working for the betterment of public education in the Commonwealth. VEA is the state affiliate of the National Education Association with more than 3.2 million members. 


Position and Description


The Information System Specialist (ISS) takes responsibility for the efficient operation, maintenance, and security of VEA computer networks, hardware and peripheral equipment, and technology services supplied by the Technology & Data (T&D) department. The ISS also assists the Director in the development and execution of technology initiatives to support the Association’s strategic goals.


Core Job Functions

  • Proactively maintains all VEA networks, computers and services including on-premises, remote and cloud
  • Ensures the safety security of VEA data and systems
  • Researches, specifies, and sources new hardware and software
  • Implements association-wide hardware and software initiatives
  • Provides technical support to on-site and remote staff
  • Consistently delivers technology training to staff, local leaders, and UniServ office staff
  • Monitors and maintains backup and disaster recovery systems
  • Provides technical support for VEA events as needed
  • Assists the Director in the development and execution of VEA’s technology & data strategy
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of T&D or the Executive Director
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 5+ years working as a professional in technology operations.
  • Prior experience working in a non-profit environment.
  • Prior experience working for or as a member of a union.
  • Must love users.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Salary and Benefits


This is a professional staff position covered by the VEA/VPSA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Salary is negotiable depending upon applicant’s experience and qualifications. Effective September 1, 2022, the VEA/Staff CBA has a salary range of $71,740 to $107,555 for 2022-2023. The contract also includes an excellent fringe benefits package.
