The After-School Academy program at Peter Paul’s Coleman Center caters to students in grades 4-12. The program offers daily instruction in core subject areas alongside enrichment activities. The Lead Teacher plays a crucial role in creating a dynamic learning environment, incorporating project-based learning, literacy, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) into the curriculum. The ideal candidate will align with Peter Paul’s values, embracing the mission to ensure a high-quality, safe experience for all students. The program emphasizes maintaining high expectations for all stakeholders and fostering a positive, supportive team atmosphere.


Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Foster a classroom culture promoting group thinking, curiosity, and discovery.
  2. Collaborate with fellow staff to develop and implement daily lesson plans and activities.
  3. Implement Peter Paul’s daily expectations and behavior system.
  4. Demonstrate unwavering commitment to classroom engagement.
  5. Regularly communicate with parents/guardians and daytime classroom teachers.
  6. Actively participate in weekly staff meetings and contribute to planning and special events committees.
  7. Maintain well-organized and accurate records, including communication logs and incident reports.
  8. Engage in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and professional growth opportunities to stay current with best practices.
  9. Adhere to face mask requirements and practice physical distancing as needed.
  10. Perform additional assigned duties.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a part-time, hourly position with a rate of $21 per hour. The expected work schedule is Monday-Friday during program hours (3:00-6:15), with additional hours allotted for planning time, team meetings, and educational trainings.


Required Qualifications:

  1. Minimum age of 18.
  2. Possess one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a child-related field (e.g., elementary education, nursing, recreation) from an accredited college or university.
    • A one-year early childhood certificate from an accredited college or university comprising at least 30 semester hours.
    • A child development credential from an approved institution as defined in Section 22.1-289.048 of the Code of Virginia.
    • A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.
  3. Minimum of three months of programmatic experience.
  4. Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  5. Experience working with students in a classroom setting.
  6. Proficiency in developing lesson plans.
  7. Excellent oral, verbal, and written communication skills.
  8. Knowledge of current educational research.
  9. Understanding of and familiarity with working in an urban setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree and substantial teaching experience.
  2. Familiarity with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  3. Subject matter expertise in science, technology, engineering, art, or math.
  4. Experience with the Eureka Math curriculum.
