The After-School Academy program at Peter Paul’s Coleman Center caters to students in grades 4-12. The program offers daily instruction in core subject areas alongside enrichment activities. The Lead Teacher plays a crucial role in creating a dynamic learning environment, incorporating project-based learning, literacy, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) into the curriculum. Primary Responsibilities:
- Foster a classroom culture promoting group thinking, curiosity, and discovery.
- Collaborate with fellow staff to develop and implement daily lesson plans and activities.
- Implement Peter Paul’s daily expectations and behavior system.
- Demonstrate unwavering commitment to classroom engagement.
- Regularly communicate with parents/guardians and daytime classroom teachers.
- Actively participate in weekly staff meetings and contribute to planning and special events committees.
- Maintain well-organized and accurate records, including communication logs and incident reports.
- Engage in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and professional growth opportunities to stay current with best practices.
- Adhere to face mask requirements and practice physical distancing as needed.
- Perform additional assigned duties.
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a part-time, hourly position with a rate of $21 per hour. The expected work schedule is Monday-Friday during program hours (3:00-6:15), with additional hours allotted for planning time, team meetings, and educational trainings.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 18.
- Possess one of the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a child-related field (e.g., elementary education, nursing, recreation) from an accredited college or university.
- A one-year early childhood certificate from an accredited college or university comprising at least 30 semester hours.
- A child development credential from an approved institution as defined in Section 22.1-289.048 of the Code of Virginia.
- A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.
- Minimum of three months of programmatic experience.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Experience working with students in a classroom setting.
- Proficiency in developing lesson plans.
- Excellent oral, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of current educational research.
- Understanding of and familiarity with working in an urban setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree and substantial teaching experience.
- Familiarity with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Subject matter expertise in science, technology, engineering, art, or math.
- Experience with the Eureka Math curriculum.
