The City of Richmond is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking individual to join its team as an Early Childhood Literacy and Learning Librarian at the Richmond Public Library. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, an excellent communicator and listener, a team player, a problem solver, and above all, someone who embodies exceptional customer service.


Mission: To provide professional early literacy and childhood learning services and oversight for the assigned location by developing and implementing programs and services reflecting the library’s strategic plan for the City of Richmond.


Responsibilities:

  • Works under general direction to set early childhood Learning and Literacy program goals and objectives.
  • Provides comprehensive library services specializing in early childhood to patrons and community agencies.
  • Promotes and markets programs and activities, specifically the BASICS, and prepares reports.
  • Coordinates services and programs related to early childhood learning and develops partnerships with community organizations for youth outreach programs.
  • Represents the library at outreach community events and conducts research on early childhood learning best practices.
  • Participates in team decision-making, staff development, training, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Required to work on-site weekdays, evenings, and weekends on a rotating basis.

Qualifications and Requirements:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge in early childhood learning and literacy, outreach program development, customer service, and community organization partnerships.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning and implementing programs, conducting outreach, comprehending patrons' needs, managing collections, exploring funding options, making data-driven decisions, and more.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, public speaking, oral and written communication skills, and high-level decision-making ability and creativity.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science ALA accredited.
  • Four (4) years of public library experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience.

Preferred Training and Experience:

  • Excellent customer service, enthusiasm, energy, and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth experience with early childhood learning skills and development.
  • Experience developing system-wide programs and training staff in new subject matters.

Licensing, Certifications, and Special Requirements:

  • Eligibility to obtain Librarian’s Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year.

Environmental Hazards:

  • Working conditions may include exposure to travel, hazardous physical conditions, atmospheric conditions, inadequate lighting, intense noise, and environmental hazards.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

  • Detailed work on multiple tasks, frequent interruptions, and ability to work under time constraints.
  • Ability to perform various physical tasks regularly and occasionally.
