The City of Richmond seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as a fulltime Librarian, Senior (Young Adults) for the Richmond Public Library. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is an excellent communicator and listener, a team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes good customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower.


To provide professional library services and oversight for the assigned location, by developing and implementing programs and services to reflect the library’s strategic plan for the City of Richmond. The incumbent is responsible for working with diverse groups within the community and providing exceptional customer service by assisting patrons with the use of emerging technologies and access to library resources. This position will require some evening and weekend scheduling on a rotating basis onsite. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and conducting programs for youth 13-18
  • Planning and conducting the Young Adult Virginia Author (YAVA) Program
  • Presenting computer and electronic resources to young adults for research and reference
  • Assisting library users with readers advisory and reference questions
  • Entering programs on website software
  • Promoting library services in the community
  • Preparing statistical reports
  • Participating in team decision-making, staff development, and training
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.


Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 


The incumbent has considerable knowledge of the area of focus, including supervisory and management practices, basic cataloging, development trends and best practices, electronic databases, and related software applications such as Deep Freeze, Envisionware, Google Suite, LPT One, Word Press, etc., some marketing and promoting of programs, and a thorough understanding of a specific field, program, or area of expertise such as legal, children and youth, etc. The individual can demonstrate skills in assisting in program set-up and tear-down, conducting reference interviews, trainings, and seminars, comprehending patrons' needs and problems, developing, implementing, and managing a collection for a specific class or program, exploring funding options for various initiatives and assisting the Foundation as needed, making data-driven decisions regarding community needs and solutions to community challenges, planning and conducting relevant programs for branch and system, providing assistance at the circulation desk to ensure all patrons' needs are met, researching, preparing, teaching, and educating through classroom, one-on-one, print, or computerized resources, using catalogs, databases, and other information sources effectively and efficiently to locate items, and writing grants and reports as needed. This individual can demonstrate the ability to possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, excellent oral and written communication, and a high level of decision making and creativity.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science ALA accredited
  • Four (4) years of public library experience
  • One year of supervisory experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian's Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of time.

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Excellent customer service, enthusiasm, energy, and interpersonal skills
  • In-depth experience with desktops, laptops, tablets, eBooks' readers, smartphones, and video equipment
  • Experience developing system-wide programs and training staff in new subject matters

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly work with one's fingers, talk, hear, see, and use repetitive motions; frequently walk; and occasionally stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel.
