The City of Richmond Community Services, Library - Division of Customer Service is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Part-Time Library Associate at Various Branch locations. This position involves coordinating programs and services for users and staff of the City Library.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning, developing, and implementing special library activities and programs.
- Execution of the City Library's strategic plan, including providing programs for children, young adults, and special needs groups.
- Facilitating, marketing, and promoting special programs.
- Preparing and updating library web content.
- Assisting patrons with locating materials in the computer or catalog and physically locating materials or equipment.
- Supporting circulation functions and assisting with special projects or other library programs.
- Working on-site weekdays, evening, and weekend scheduling on a rotating basis.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Preparing, coordinating, planning, and facilitating programs and activities.
- Promoting and marketing programs and activities.
- Preparing reports.
- Assisting supervisors with staff supervision duties.
- Assisting patrons and answering their questions.
- Performing circulation duties.
- Conducting outreach.
- Representing the library at various community events.
- Writing various reviews, reports, and other documents.
- Attending various meetings, including staff meetings.
- Training staff as needed.
Essential Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The incumbent should possess considerable knowledge of routine library functions, policies, practices, classification systems (e.g., the Dewey Decimal System), and circulation functions. Key areas of emphasis include:
- Children's developmental stages and STEAM activities.
- Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Integrated Library Systems, electronic databases, and related software applications.
- Mastery of English composition, spelling, and grammar.
- General knowledge of current and classic literature, especially children's genres.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to assist patrons, communicate effectively with internal and external departments, work with youth of various age groups, and market and promote special programs.
- Proficiency in planning, coordinating, developing, implementing, and facilitating special activities and programs.
- Experience in updating library websites and managing social media communications.
- Ability to research and stay current on early literature best practices, teaching, reading stories to children, troubleshooting youth challenges, utilizing library programs as tools for reference or information questions, and operating various office equipment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Literature, Education, Information Systems, or related field.
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school is preferred.
- Two years of public library experience.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience approved by the department may be considered.
