The City of Richmond Public Library seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as an entry-level Library Technician. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is a self-starter, excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes exceptional customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower. This position will require some days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) on a rotating basis.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Providing customer service
  • Performing circulation desk duties
  • Circulating library materials to customers
  • Assisting patrons in finding materials or other pertinent information either online, in-person, or over the phone
  • Processing returned materials, issuing, updating, and replacing library cards and other library resource accounts
  • Collecting money for fees
  • Opening and closing cash registers
  • Counting funds for reports
  • Answering phones, email, SMS, sorting mails, and distributing them accordingly
  • Assisting patrons with simple to complex requests such as computer printing, copying, faxing, and logging onto a computer workstation
  • Closing/opening computer lab
  • Maintaining Integrated Library System computer database for patrons and material records
  • Shelving books and other materials in proper order
  • Sorting and organizing library materials
  • Anticipating patrons’ needs
  • Fielding patrons’ inquiries
  • Recommending material to patrons
  • Participating in library-wide committees or projects
  • Creating displays, flyers, and other promotional materials
  • Participating in staff development and training
  • Operating library vehicle to transport books or supplies to another facility

This position is considered Essential Personnel, meaning the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.


Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of routine and advanced clerical and other support services
  • Basic math skills and ability to use the Dewey Decimal System
  • Comfortable using computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment
  • Knowledge of cash register procedures
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to help patrons find materials or other pertinent information online, in-person, or over the phone
  • Comfortable with opening and closing registers, collecting money for fines and other fees, counting funds for reports, and processing payments and purchases
  • Ability to train volunteers, interns, AARP, and work-study students on library processes and procedures
  • Ability to promote and coordinate library events such as children’s story time, art committee, and other programs and clubs
  • Ability to create displays, flyers, and other promotional materials

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of public library-related support experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may meet the minimum qualifications
