The City of Richmond Community Services, Library - Division of Customer Service is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Library Technician to handle routine and advanced clerical and other support services for the City Library.


Duties Include


  • Provides customer service
  • Performs circulation desk duties
  • Circulates library materials to customers
  • Assists patrons to find materials or other pertinent information either online, in-person, or over the phone
  • Processes returned materials, issues, updates, and replaces library cards and other library resource accounts
  • Collects money for fees
  • Opens and close cash registers
  • Counts funds for reports
  • Answer phones, email, SMS, sort mails and distributes them accordingly
  • Assist patrons with simple to complex requests such as computer printing, copying, faxing, logging onto a computer workstation, closes/opens computer lab
  • Maintains Integrated Library System computer database maintenance for patrons and material records
  • Shelves books and other materials in proper order
  • Sort and organizes library materials
  • Anticipates patrons’ needs
  • Fields patrons’ inquiries
  • Recommends material to patrons
  • May participate in library-wide committees or projects
  • Creates displays, flyers, and other promotional materials
  • Participates in staff development and training
  • May be required to operate library vehicle to transport books or supplies to another facility

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.


The candidate has considerable knowledge of routine and advanced clerical and other support services in order to help patrons with their needs. This individual has the basic math and be able to use the Dewey Decimal System. Must be comfortable using computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) The incumbent knows how to use the standard office equipment’s and has knowledge of cash register procedures. This individual must follow the City Library’s circulation procedures and policies. The individual can demonstrate skills on excellent customer service, great interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to help patrons find materials or other pertinent information either online, in-person, or over the phone as well as comfortable with opening and closing registers, collect money for fines and other fees, count funds for reports and rings up payments and purchases. The individual is able to train volunteers, interns, AARP, and work-study students on library processes and procedures. This individual can demonstrate the ability to promote and coordinates library events such as children’s story time, art-committee, and other programs and clubs. As well as able to crates displays, flyers, and other promotional materials.


Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of public library related support experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
  • Some positions may require a valid driver’s license with an acceptable record and a Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license within 30 days of hire
  • Spanish speaking skills preferred, but not required.
