The City of Richmond Community Services, Library - Division of Customer Service is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of part-time Library Technician. 


This role involves handling routine and advanced clerical and other support services for the City Library. 


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing customer service
  • Performing circulation desk duties
  • Circulating library materials to customers
  • Assisting patrons to find materials or other pertinent information either online, in-person, or over the phone
  • Processing returned materials, issuing, updating, and replacing library cards and other library resource accounts
  • Collecting money for fees
  • Opening and closing cash registers
  • Counting funds for reports
  • Answering phones, emails, SMS
  • Sorting and distributing mail
  • Assisting patrons with simple to complex requests such as computer printing, copying, faxing, and logging onto a computer workstation
  • Maintaining Integrated Library System computer database for patrons and material records
  • Shelving books and other materials in proper order
  • Sorting and organizing library materials
  • Anticipating patrons' needs
  • Fielding patrons' inquiries
  • Recommending materials to patrons
  • Participating in library-wide committees or projects
  • Creating displays, flyers, and other promotional materials
  • Participating in staff development and training
  • Operating library vehicles to transport books or supplies to another facility

This position will require on-site work on weekdays, evenings, and weekends on a rotating basis. This position is considered Essential Personnel, requiring work during City closures due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.


Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 


The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of routine and advanced clerical and other support services to assist patrons
  • Basic math skills and familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment
  • Understanding of cash register procedures
  • Ability to follow the City Library's circulation procedures and policies
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to assist patrons in finding materials or information, both online and in-person
  • Comfortable with opening and closing registers, collecting fines and fees, and handling payments
  • Ability to train volunteers, interns, AARP members, and work-study students on library processes and procedures
  • Skill in promoting and coordinating library events and programs
  • Capable of creating displays, flyers, and promotional materials

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of public library-related support experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements: Some positions may require a valid driver’s license with an acceptable record and a Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, perform repetitive motions, stand, finger, and walk; frequently reach, grasp, lift, pull, and push; and occasionally climb, stoop, crouch, and feel.
