The City of Richmond Public Library seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as a Library Technician, Senior. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is a self-starter, excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes good customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower.


Position Responsibilities


This position is responsible for serving as the lead for circulation services for the Richmond Public Library. This position is required to work days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) schedule on a rotating basis. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Creating, updating, and maintaining library user records
  • Issuing library cards
  • Charging/discharging library materials
  • Planning, directing, and managing daily workflow of circulation functions
  • Providing information to library users by phone and/or in person
  • Preparing periodic and routine financial and statistical reports for the assigned library
  • Directing the return of materials to the proper order on the shelves
  • Assisting in training circulation staff and volunteers as directed by the branch manager
  • Tabulating and properly accounting for all monies received by the library branch
  • Accounting for and preparing weekly deposits of all monies received by the branch
  • Serving as administrative support lead of an assigned library or unit for daily operations
  • Coordinating and performing office work; overseeing work completion
  • Participating in staff development and training when offered and ensuring staff participation
  • Collecting overdue fines and other fees from customers
  • Performing data entry, maintaining, and updating library materials
  • Maintaining computer catalog
  • Assisting with staffing needs at other locations
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


The incumbent should have considerable understanding of library cataloging and classification systems as well as electronic databases and related software applications. This individual should have basic math and accounting skills and be comfortable using computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). The incumbent should know how to use standard office equipment and have knowledge of cash register procedures. The selected candidate should understand proper telephone etiquette, demonstrate excellent customer service skills, have great interpersonal skills, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The incumbent should be able to communicate with various internal and external departments as well as calling patrons with requested items. Additionally, the individual should be able to make decisions on when to charge patrons for damaged materials, follow standard procedures and established practices, exhibit professionalism and courtesy, and maintain accurate records while paying attention to detail.


Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of public library-related support experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
