The City of Richmond is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic individual to join its team as a Library/Community Services Manager. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, an excellent communicator, a team player, a problem solver, and above all, dedicated to providing excellent library customer service. This role involves coordinating all aspects of system-wide collection development, ensuring prompt, accurate services to both external and internal customers, and aligning with the mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower.


Key Responsibilities: 


Under the general direction of the Library Director, the responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating system-wide collection development
  • Supervising and overseeing Collection Development
  • Formulating collection guidelines and overseeing material selection
  • Managing, monitoring, and advising on the total materials budget
  • Providing system-wide leadership regarding collection issues
  • Working a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends in support of public service hours

Requirements:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of current public library collection management practices
  • Familiarity with trends in publishing, acquisitions procedures, and budgetary practices
  • Excellent communication, writing, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to supervise and manage staff and volunteers
  • Broad understanding of library science, including legal and youth-focused expertise
  • Proficiency in using library automated equipment and systems
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and decision-making skills

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Four (4) years of public library experience
  • One year of supervisory experience
  • Equivalent combinations of training and experience approved by the department may be considered

Certifications and Requirements:

  • Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian’s Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year

Preferred Training and Experience:

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with various technological devices and system-wide program development
  • Ability to train staff in new subject matters
