The Library/Community Services Manager for Outreach and Engagement is responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating the activities of the Outreach and Engagement team, working with library users of all ages in a diverse community, and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: To oversee operations and public services for users and staff of the City Library and a wide variety of tasks providing direct services to the public and indirect technical services in support of library or related information programs and operations for the City of Richmond.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the digital presence of the Library to include its website and social media
- Oversee the production of print materials to advertise the Library’s programs, services, and resources
- Represent the Richmond Public Library and making presentations in the community
- Coordinate public outreach activities and serving on community advisory boards
- Lead, train, and supervise staff
- Respond to customer questions and requests
- Use emerging technologies effectively for Library programs
- Develop goals, objectives, performance work plans, and budget for assigned department activities
- Develop outcome measures in coordination with the Library Strategic Plan
- Train, supervise, and evaluate staff members for the assigned Library or library program
- Promote the Library in the community and with local schools
- Promote public awareness through public speaking engagements, educational outreach efforts, and by serving on community advisory boards and committees
- Implement policies and procedures for the organization
- Resolve problems involving staff, other branches/departments, and library patrons
- Coordinate with intra-agency contacts and neighborhood organizations to strengthen participation in the delivery of library services, outreach, and educational activities
- Participate in collection development and management for assigned library or division, working with the Collection Development Manager for library system
- Participate in team decision-making, staff development, and training when offered
- Perform special projects as directed by management
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in library science or information services from an ALA accredited library school
- Five (5) years of public library experience
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proactive attitude
- Good organization and time management abilities
- Desire to meet community needs and challenges
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the area of focus to include automated library systems, library best practices, awareness of community needs and challenges, electronic databases and related software, emerging technologies in libraries, reference/reader advisory tools and procedures, and social media, computers, and the internet
- Skilled in taking care of assigned library department including management of the website and social media channels, AV equipment, and basic design software; supervising and managing staff, including recruiting, hiring, engaging, and training; developing and maintaining partnerships with organizations, businesses, schools, community, and individuals to address needs of the community; and making decisions in regards to objectives
Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:
- Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian’s Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of hire
