The City of Richmond Public Library system is actively seeking highly qualified, dynamic, creative, and organized candidates to fill the role of Library/Community Services Manager for Youth Services System-wide. This position entails leading, managing, and coordinating activities across various library locations while engaging with library users of all ages in a diverse community, requiring exemplary customer service skills.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee services and programs for Youth Services and Young Adult Services, ages 0-18.
  • Collaborate with local schools and neighborhood organizations to deliver joint services.
  • Represent the Richmond Public Library through community presentations and outreach activities.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate staff for library programs at all 9 locations for Youth Services and Young Adult Services.
  • Oversee the RVA Reads program and manage location collections.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, utilizing emerging technologies effectively for Library programs.
  • Develop goals, objectives, performance plans, and budgets for assigned location activities aligned with the Library Strategic Plan.

Additional Details:

  • This position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support public service hours.
  • The Richmond Public Library emphasizes employee growth by offering training and educational workshops to selected candidates.

Qualifications and Skills:


Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in library science or information services from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Five (5) years of public library experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge in automated library systems, reference tools, community needs, and emerging technologies.
  • Skill in managing staff, developing library programs, establishing partnerships, and decision-making aligned with objectives.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and time management skills.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian’s Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of hire.
