The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) is currently seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Part-time Lifeguard. PRCF oversees 2 indoor pools that remain open year-round and 7 outdoor pools that operate during the summer season. As a lifeguard in this position, you will be responsible for monitoring staff compliance with all policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:


The Part-time Lifeguard will be expected to possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Lifeguard practices, actions, and skills
  • Proficiency in various swim strokes (e.g., freestyle, breaststroke)
  • Knowledge of Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
  • Basic first aid knowledge
  • CPR certification
  • Basic water chemistry knowledge
  • Familiarity with water exercise principles
  • Familiarity with equipment such as stereo systems, water exercise equipment (dumbbells, noodles, exercise balls), handicap chair lifts, pool pumps/chemical feeders, pool vacuum, skimmers, shepherd's crook, rescue tube, ring buoy, and first aid equipment (AED, backboard, pocket mask, bag valve mask) and credit/debit card machines
  • Proficiency in using software such as RecTrac/WebTrac, Rapids/Oracle, and SABA (Red Cross Instructor Programming).

The position requires a strong swimmer capable of:

  • Administering first aid and CPR
  • Operating an AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
  • Maintaining full awareness of the pool area
  • Providing excellent customer service to individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Physically performing lifeguard duties, including swimming, towing a person, rescuing individuals, and performing lifesaving measures if necessary
  • Conducting water safety rescues in both shallow and deep water
  • Possessing written and oral communication skills
  • Being comfortable with public speaking.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring the aquatic environment and patrons to enforce facility rules and regulations, thereby preventing injuries
  • Responding immediately and effectively during emergencies
  • Assisting patrons with aquatic classes and programs, including group and individual swim lessons
  • Ensuring the safety of patrons, pool decks, and storage areas by safeguarding against potential obstacles or hazards
  • Maintaining all safety equipment and promptly reporting any concerns about faulty equipment to the Pool Manager/Head Lifeguard
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the facility
  • Conducting scheduled pool chemical checks.

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:

  • High School Diploma or GED or vocational training
  • Two years of lifeguard experience
  • Preferred: Three years of lifeguard experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (subject to department approval) may be considered to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:

  • CPO/AFO certification
  • Lifeguard certification
  • LGI certification
  • WSI certification
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification
  • Preferred: Water Aerobics certification
  • A plus: Bilingual with Spanish as a second language.
