Job Description: 


The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Maintenance & Operations Crew Chief. The incumbent will be responsible for directing and overseeing labor crews in the maintenance and improvement of built features, including ball fields, shelters, community centers, planted landscapes, and park grounds within the Southern/Northern Divisions of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. This position may also provide support to projects and improvements with the Trails and Trades units, as well as the Workforce Development Program. The Crew Chief will serve as a lead worker or first-level maintenance supervisor over a small crew and report to the Maintenance and Operations Superintendent.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing lead direction to work crews or teams, including establishing schedules and making assignments
  • Reviewing and inspecting work products
  • Training other employees
  • Assisting the crew with complex tasks
  • Making performance evaluation recommendations
  • Gathering maintenance data
  • Maintaining and updating databases
  • Maintaining files and records, and preparing reports
  • Monitoring maintenance requirements
  • Making repair recommendations
  • Working with volunteer groups, community partners, and Friends of Groups
  • Other duties/projects as assigned

Note: City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities employees in this position are considered essential personnel and may be required to work beyond scheduled hours, during inclement weather, and during declared emergencies.


Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses: 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of applicable local codes and ordinances, forecasting and planning, and safety rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated skills in operating heavy equipment, effective oral and written communication, people management, training, and customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage, problem-solve, organize, and communicate with a diverse population

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three years of experience, based on assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CDL license
  • Virginia Pesticide Applicators License
  • NRPA Playground Safety Inspector License
