The City of Richmond, Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Maintenance Specialist with the Bridge Maintenance Division.
This position is responsible for repairs and maintenance of bridges,
culverts, guardrails, and related structures. Work may also include
duties related to CIP projects and emergency operations such as the snow
program and storm operations. This position provides support to the
maintenance crew to ensure work is performed to federal and state
standards.
Duties
Performing maintenance and repairs to bridge decks, expansion joints, caps, stringers, pilings, abutments, piers, and similar structures.
Operating heavy equipment such as back hoes, front end loaders, man lifts, and other similar equipment.
Forming, pouring, and finishing structural concrete, and other types and mixtures associated with bridge maintenance and repairs.
Assisting with major traffic flow plans to include placing signage barricades and other traffic control equipment.
Conducting safety inspections of equipment and work tools, safety and maintenance inspections of area of responsibility; ensuring helpers and staff under their lead follow safety procedures; and attending safety meetings.
This
position is considered Essential Personnel, which means that the
incumbents are required to work when the City is closed due to public
emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.
The individuals may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of various trades associated with building/plant maintenance.
Specific knowledge of one or multiple trades such as carpentry, masonry, and welding.
Knowledge of related safety and OSHA requirements; and basic math and arithmetic.
Demonstrated skills in operating power tools.
Driving city vehicles to and from assigned locations.
Reading blueprints.
Good driving.
Processing the appropriate forms.
Using equipment such as a two-way radio, general hand tools, air compressor, automobile jump start box, etc.
Oral and written communication and strong customer service.
Ability to analyze information; exhibit dependability; problem solve; and manage time effectively.
Minimum Training & Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
One year of college preferred.
Three years of experience directly related to assignment.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
Licensing, Certifications, and other requirements
A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Training and Experience
Prior experience working at heights over, above, and below 100 feet.
Prior experience working in confined spaces and under harsh conditions such as near traffic, on steep, uneven terrain, and inclement weather.
Possess a current and valid Class B CDL or able to obtain it within six (6) months of hire.
