Description
The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities is seeking a qualified Maintenance Specialist, Senior to maintain and repair City property, equipment, and facilities through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. This position will provide specialized, skilled general maintenance based on assignment to a City department or maintenance function. The incumbent may serve as lead workers or first-level maintenance supervisors over a small crew, typically reporting to a second level maintenance supervisor who oversees multiple crews. Work may include providing lead direction to work crews or teams including establishing schedules and making assignments; reviewing/inspecting work products; training employees; assisting lower level staff with complex tasks; making performance evaluation recommendations; gathering maintenance data; maintaining and updating databases; maintaining files and records; preparing reports; monitoring maintenance requirements; and making repair recommendations.
Incumbents assigned to hazardous materials oversee crews and perform repairs and maintenance of hazardous chemical metering equipment, boilers, water treatment equipment, and corrosion control chemical dosing equipment.
Additionally, as assigned, the incumbent may serve as a lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion. The incumbent may also supervise paraprofessional and support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Lead, perform and assist with skilled maintenance work, levee inspections, gat inspections and closures
- Operate and man pumping stations during flood events
- Collect daily vehicle inspections for supervisor
- Maintain updated data on canal maintenance, flood events and pesticide records
- Required to set up safety work zones in heavy traffic areas and perform equipment repairs as needed
- May assist with performance evaluations, gathering maintenance data, maintaining up-to-date databases, maintaining files and records and preparing reports
- Assist with scheduling work assignments, identifying maintenance needs and keeping records on crew activities
This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.
This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Associate's Degree preferred
- Five years of progressive experience in the assigned technical field
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department ) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
- Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Positions in tree maintenance require ISA certification (International Society of Arboriculture) and pesticide certification
- Positions in hazardous materials require certification for handling refrigerants

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, pull, finger, talk, see, hear and use repetitive motion; frequently feel, grasp, finger and see; frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
