This position involves the maintenance and repair of City property, equipment, and facilities. Incumbents perform a range of semi-skilled and skilled labor, along with technical work, tailored to specific assignments within a City department or maintenance function. Some may serve as lead workers or first-level maintenance supervisors, overseeing a small crew. They typically report to a second-level maintenance supervisor managing multiple crews.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide specialized, skilled general maintenance based on assignment.
- May lead work crews or teams, establish schedules, assign tasks, review work, and train employees.
- Assist with complex tasks, make performance evaluations, gather maintenance data, maintain records, prepare reports, monitor maintenance needs, and offer repair recommendations.
- Oversee hazardous materials maintenance including repairs of hazardous chemical metering equipment, boilers, water treatment equipment, and corrosion control chemical dosing equipment.
- Oversee tree maintenance including tree maintenance/removal, limb debris removal, verification of cleanup, planting, instruction on tree care/placement, pesticide usage instruction, and disease/insect control.
Additional Duties:
- Lead, perform, and assist in skilled maintenance work, including scheduling, assigning tasks, and handling complicated tasks.
- Supervise/direct maintenance crews, monitor work, maintain records, and perform administrative tasks.
- Ensure proper tool/equipment usage and safety.
- Investigate citizen complaints, meet stakeholders to discuss and resolve issues.
- Perform special assignments as required.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge: People management, local codes, boiler operations, MSDS, HVAC principles, tree maintenance methods, etc.
- Skills: Communication, operating heavy equipment, budgeting, customer service, plumbing, carpentry, etc.
- Abilities: Autonomy, problem-solving, diverse communication.
Minimum Training and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED (Associate's Degree preferred).
- Five years of progressive technical field experience or an equivalent approved combination of training/experience.
Licensing, Certifications, and Special Requirements:
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory record.
- Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
- Some assignments may require a Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License.
- ISA certification for tree maintenance positions and pesticide certification.
- Certification for handling refrigerants in hazardous materials positions.
