Description

The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to assume responsibility of general grounds maintenance and cleaning of parks, cemeteries, and facilities throughout Parks Recreation and Community Facilities. This position will assist the department with establishing and executing regular maintenance cycles that will ensure that the parks, cemeteries, facilities, and green spaces are safe, clean, and accessible for public use.

Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Performing routine cleaning tasks and maintenance of community centers, shelters, and restrooms.
  • Mowing, weed eating, trash/debris removal, supporting special events and projects, and snow/ice removal
  • Maintaining athletic field maintenance, leaf collection/removal, invasive plant removal, and minor equipment repair
  • Cleaning buildings and other facilities as needed
  • Provide Park guest with friendly & professional customer service, useful information and recommendations for safe park and facility usage
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED or specialized vocational training
  • Two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

 

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some assignments may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record

 
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • Basic math
  • Basic/standard repairs and maintenance applications
  • Chemicals and their commercial and industrial applications
  • Commercial mowing equipment
  • Machine safety procedures, including "lock-out tag-out"
  • Specific knowledge related to area of responsibility such as paint applications, paint removal, application of dry wall, playground safety, playground inspection, etc.
  • Variety of hand and power tools needed for various circumstances
  • Usage and safe operation of various equipment and tools
  • Various plants and fauna for safety reasons
  • Mechanics

 

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Breaking down and rebuilding equipment
  • Cleaning area of responsibility
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments
  • Conducting snow removal
  • Ensuring equipment is in safe working order, cleaned, and well maintained
  • Leading a crew and keeping them safe
  • Mixing and pouring concrete properly if area of focus
  • Navigating work area
  • Performing minor repairs and replacing damaged equipment
  • Performing routine or heavy cleaning
  • Reading a tape measure and a diagram
  • Reading and writing
  • Setting up and assisting with special events
  • Using and operating equipment such as tractors, backhoes, hand tools, power tools, weed eaters, dump trucks, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
