Description

 

The City of Richmond, Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician with the Department of Transportation.  The incumbent is responsible for the installation of small line pavement markings. Consists of Crosswalks, school zones, stop bars, and RR crossings. 

 

Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Performing, assigning and maintaining tasks to assistants/ helpers; supervising work to ensure standards are met;
  • Generating work orders, maintaining records and work order files;
  • Performing technical work in the operation of equipment related to street striping with the application of paint and thermoplastic street markings;
  • Performing routine maintenance for assigned equipment;
  • Maintaining and cleaning pavement shop, marking tools and equipment;
  • Repairing striping machines;
  • Operating forklift, walk-behind striping machines and striping trucks;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

 

**City of Richmond Public Works employees who work in this class are considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during declared emergencies and major weather events.**

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Two (2) years of experience, based on assignment;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some positions may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • If assigned to road maintenance, may require Hazmat and Tanker license.


PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Selected candidate must have a commercial driver license (CDL) or have a commercial driver learner's permit and a scheduled appointment with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to complete any remaining requirements prior to consideration.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  • Basic math
  • Basic/standard repairs and maintenance applications
  • Chemicals and their commercial and industrial applications
  • Specific knowledge related to area of responsibility such as paint applications
  • Variety of hand and power tools needed for various circumstances
  • Usage and safe operation of various equipment and tools
  • Mechanics

  • Breaking down and rebuilding equipment
  • Cleaning area of responsibility
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments
  • Conducting snow removal
  • Ensuring equipment is in safe working order, clean, and well maintained
  • Navigating work area
  • Performing minor repairs and replacing damaged equipment
  • Performing routine or heavy cleaning
  • Reading a tape measure and a diagram
  • Reading and writing
  • Setting up and assisting with special events

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift; and occasionally stoop, crawl, finger, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
