The Multimedia Journalist helps our expanded news team increase the reach and impact of our news stories with complementary visual content. This role is for someone with a passion for news, the sense of urgency necessary to respond to breaking news and the creativity to deliver content to various digital platforms. Reporting to the Digital News Editor, this role will take ownership of VPM News’ vast visual archive by bringing ideas for how to best organize and make use of archival materials.
VPM is a public media organization serving Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Our teams produce documentaries, TV series and digital content. The VPM News team produces award-winning journalism for our NPR and PBS stations with distribution across our digital channels to over 2 million people in VPM’s coverage area.

Responsibilities
- Creates pieces for VPM News’ digital and social platforms, including photography, video explainers, breaking news and other content designed to enhance the impact of the newsroom’s content, drawing from public events and digital archives.
- Produces, shoots, edits and optimizes digital photography, video and other compelling, sharable content to support VPM News, including — but not limited to — interviews, original features, news explainers, live streams, mini-series and events coverage.
- Pitches visual, audio and prose stories.
- Contributes to long-term projects and series that include detailed planning and collaboration across the newsroom.
- 1 to 3 years of experience producing photography and video for digital platforms.
- Demonstrated understanding of social media platforms along with the format and type of visual journalism that resonates on each platform.
- Experience writing news-related content.
- Possesses knowledge of CMS and SEO best practices.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse teams and audiences.
- Strong ability to balance multiple priorities, projects and tasks.
- Possesses a valid driver’s license.
- Possesses the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Sony Ci preferred.
- Experience in design preferred.
- Possessing working knowledge of local and state government is a bonus.
