The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, established in 1936, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. It is a state agency and privately endowed educational institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting art, as well as encouraging the study of the arts. VMFA offers curated exhibitions, audiovisual programs, symposia, lectures, conferences, workshops, and houses a global collection of art spanning over 6,000 years.
Position Responsibilities:
- Apply finishes, including paint, stain, varnish, fabrics, and wall coverings, to exhibit construction with adherence to high museum standards.
- Perform maintenance painting in galleries and surrounding museum spaces.
- Fabric wrap case parts as necessary, applying marvel seals as required (training provided).
- Remove labels, patch, and paint surfaces.
- Attach hanging clips for graphic panels installation.
- Assist in fabrication of display casework, pedestals, and architectural elements for exhibitions, ensuring high standards.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promoting workplace safety and environmental practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of painting and finishing techniques relevant to museum exhibits.
- Proficiency in using brushes, rollers, spraying tools, and related equipment.
- Ability to apply various finishes meeting museum quality standards.
- Skill in selecting and applying paint and associated products.
- Competence in wood surface preparation, staining, and sealing.
- Ability to use hand and power tools.
- Capacity to estimate project time and material requirements.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Flexibility and commitment to project goals.
- Ability to work under pressure while maintaining quality output.
Additional Considerations:
- Directly related experience preferred.
- Prior experience in cultural arts or museum setting highly desirable.
