Under the direction and guidance of the Sr. Director of Children’s Educational Services, this position is responsible for the operational oversight of assigned academies within the policies, procedures and practices of St. Joseph’s Villa, and in alignment with regulatory, accrediting, and licensing requirements. This position also oversees the community partners program.
Work is performed using a systems approach within the psycho-educational model. All work is performed safely, effectively, to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St. Joseph’s Villa’s mission, values, and guiding principles.
Job Functions
- Oversees all operational aspects of the assigned school
- Exercises responsibility for the health and safety of each student
- Recommends policy revisions, and consistently and equitably implements all St. Joseph’s Villa’s and System’s policies
- Serves as liaison to the administrators of other agencies within the community, which either place children at the school or have an official interest in such programs
- Assists in all public relations efforts as they relate to the school
- Ensures compliance with state licensing and professional accreditation standards for the school
- Communicates regularly with the System’s Director through written reports, and attendance and participation at agency meetings and management team meetings
- Ensures that teaching occurs in accordance with Virginia endorsement, curriculum requirements, and professional criteria, including meeting the Standards of Learning (SOLs), Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individualized Alternative Education Plans (IAEPs). Is responsible for maintaining up to date curriculum in keeping with all VDOE requirements.
- Provides leadership to the development and implementation of individualized educational plans, procedures, and document flow, in accordance with St. Joseph’s Villa’s policies and procedures and governing regulatory, licensing, and accrediting bodies
- Supervises the school faculty to insure coordinated use of discipline and implementation of the psycho-educational principles of teaching, and ensures that curriculum development and implementation includes School’s treatment team
- Provides leadership to the partnership between and among students, parents, faculty, St. Joseph’s Villa staff and community leaders
- Ensures successful implementation of the school’s mission, values, and vision for quality service
- Ensures stewardship of the school’s budget
- Leads the community relations efforts with professional service agencies and other groups interested in the School’s programs. Evaluates community’s needs for specialized education and makes recommendations to the System’s Director for new or revised services
- Serves as a member of the System’s Management Team participating in a shared leadership model
- Prepares regular reports for the Board of Trustees
- Maintains awareness of developing trends in innovative teaching techniques, evaluates emerging methodologies for appropriateness for St. Joseph’s Villa’s student population and objectives, and makes recommendations to the System’s Director regarding the adoption of new methodologies
- Develops and presents formal in-service trainings to enhance teaching staff’s knowledge of and proficiency with instructional modalities to support the students’ individual learning needs
- Ensures a safe and clean learning environment through development of annual preventive maintenance plan for the facility and communication to contracted janitorial services
- Responsible for ensuring that vehicles signed out by the school are properly maintained and operated, and that all accidents and instances of misuse or abuse of the vehicles are investigated
- Participates in staff meetings and program activities, including after school and evening programs, essential for the operation of an effective psycho-educational program
- Evaluates work processes and methods; staffing levels, qualifications and training needs; tools, equipment, and physical resources; and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement
- Assumes responsibility for own professional development including meeting all mandated standards and staying abreast of developments within the field
- Ensures that staff receives training to meet mandated standards that develop their professional abilities and that prepare them for advancement opportunities
- Models appropriate professional behavior
- Assumes on-call responsibility as assigned
- Performs other duties as required or directed
- MS degree in Education Administration and Supervision or related field
- Five years teaching or treatment experience with special education population
- Virginia State Post-Graduate Professional Teaching Certificate endorsed by the State in at least one of the specific areas of disability served by the school and an endorsement in K-12 Administration and Supervision
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point) and Internet research
- Valid Virginia Driver’s license with excellent driving record KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of academic principles and educational needs of socially, emotionally, cognitively and developmentally challenged school-aged children
- Demonstrated knowledge of “best practices” in advanced instructional techniques and classroom management
- Knowledge of organizational and behavioral management principles in relationship to development, implementation, and evaluation of a school program
- Ability to implement the psycho-educational model of education
- Ability to supervise and train teachers formally and on-the-job in a supportive and collaborative manner
- Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with academic staff, parents, students, community leaders, and related agencies
- Ability to develop and work effectively within a collaborative shared leadership team model
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
