The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile dedicated multi-use trail connecting Richmond and Williamsburg along the beautiful and historic Route 5 corridor. The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that exists to protect, promote, and enhance the Virginia Capital Trail and to serve as a resource, community builder, and connector to other trails throughout the Commonwealth. We are a small but mighty team passionate about the Capital Trail, active-living, and our region.


Position: Program and Trail Manager The Program and Trail Manager at the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation plays a crucial role in overseeing and coordinating various programs and initiatives. This position requires a combination of project management, community engagement, and organizational skills to ensure the successful implementation of the foundation's programs. The Program and Trail Manager reports to the Executive Director and collaborates with internal staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.


Program Development and Implementation

  • Identify and develop new programs and initiatives aligned with the foundation's mission and strategic goals.
  • Coordinate the planning, execution, and evaluation of existing programs, including the Trail Ambassador Program, adopt-a-trail program, annual trail clean-ups, and outreach programs, ensuring they are delivered effectively and within budget.
  • Collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and partners to define program objectives, milestones, and outcomes.
  • Monitor program progress, track milestones, and adjust plans to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Coordinate with volunteers and partner organizations to ensure the smooth implementation of program goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate with the communications and development manager and create marketing materials related to programs, which may include flyers, newsletter articles, social media posts or events, and website editing.

Community Engagement

  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement meetings to foster effective communication among partners and ensure alignment with the goals of the Virginia Capital Trail.
  • Foster and grow current and new relationships with trail users, community groups, local government agencies, and other stakeholders and partners.
  • Provide support in reporting and organizing maintenance concerns to stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance in monitoring and executing the addition of amenities along the Capital Trail.
  • Organize and participate in community events, workshops, and public meetings.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and distribute program-related communications, newsletters, and social media content.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for program-related activities, including educational events and community outreach.
  • Provide guidance and support to volunteers, ensuring a positive and rewarding experience.
  • Maintain volunteer records and recognize their contributions through appreciation events or acknowledgments.

Program Evaluation and Reporting

  • Develop metrics and evaluation tools to measure the effectiveness and impact of programs.
  • Collect and analyze data, prepare reports, and present findings to the staff team.
  • Utilize evaluation results to identify areas for improvement and make recommendations for program enhancements.

Events

  • Assist the Special Events and Program Manager with the execution of logistics for special events, including the Cap2Cap Bike Ride and the Cap Trail Run.
  • Assist with volunteer coordination for special events.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, outdoor recreation, environmental studies, education) or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in program management, preferably in a nonprofit or community-based organization.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, budgeting, executing, and tracking progress.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for building relationships and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience teaching others in small group settings.
  • Creative and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and lead volunteers effectively.
  • Knowledge of trail development and outdoor recreation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Passion for the Capital Trail (being a cyclist or a runner is a plus).
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally.

The Program and Trail Manager position at the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the organization. The role requires a passion for trails, community engagement, and project management skills to ensure the effective implementation of programs that support the foundation's mission. The standard office hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend work required for programs. Currently, the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation follows a hybrid work model, with three days in the office and two days remote. The office is located in Downtown Richmond, VA. It is essential to have reliable transportation for commuting to and from the office and program sites.
