The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate to fill the position of Recreation Services Program Specialist in the Recreation Division. This position will report to the Recreation Services Manager.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing professional recreation programming by planning, implementing, and supervising recreational programming and events.
  • Collaborating with community groups, neighborhood associations, and various commissions and foundations to enhance offerings at the center.
  • Recruiting citizen volunteers and soliciting vendors for reduced or free supplies.
  • Representing the City in community meetings, providing fiscal management of assigned programs, and preparing reports.
  • Coordinating on-site staff training for community center staff.
  • Overseeing sports and other inter-agency programs.
  • Coordinating scheduling for staff and assisting in building and field rentals.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Sport Management, Education, Business Administration, or similar field.
  • 2-3 years of recreation program experience.
  • Valid VA driver's license.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and leadership skills.
  • Professional, flexible, and mature attitude.
  • Proficient in computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience as a lead staff or program supervisor.
  • Experience working directly with community groups and supervising staff and/or volunteers.
  • Evidence of successful community events or programs.
