The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Road Maintenance Technician. The incumbent will operate equipment to perform roadway maintenance tasks, ensuring safe road conditions and conducting emergency repairs.


This position requires a current and valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) endorsement.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections of active construction sites to ensure proper construction and function of BMPs and other stormwater structures.
  • Ensure compliance with the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Law and Regulations.
  • Review pollution prevention plans and ensure the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is updated and implemented as required.
  • Document inspections according to procedures and prepare/submit inspection reports.
  • Enter and maintain inspection data for each project into a database and spreadsheets.
  • Initiate enforcement action when necessary and ensure compliance to correct deficiencies or violations.

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safety principles and procedures, roadway maintenance procedures and related equipment, and traffic safety and related equipment (e.g. cones and barriers).
  • Skill in operating heavy equipment such as backhoes and front end loaders, driving work trucks, dump trucks, and fuel trucks, stocking vehicles with necessary supplies.
  • Skill with interpersonal communication, oral and written communication, and coordinating with various departments and divisions.
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment, manage time effectively, and problem-solve.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • Two (2) years of prior related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:

  • Requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License (with Tanker endorsement and Hazardous Materials endorsement).
