The Sustainability Coordinator will report directly to the Sustainability Manager who oversees the pathways of Transportation, Waste, and the Environment and will work closely with the departments of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Planning and Development Review, Economic Development, Housing and Community Development to ensure successful implementation of the City’s RVAGreen 2050 Plan. In addition, this role will support in coordinating with community partners and organizations, business and civic stakeholders, and citizens to implement the City’s climate action and resiliency plans, policies, and programs to provide positive impacts on the City’s built environment, while providing environmental justice to all its citizens.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supports strategic planning efforts and project manages initiatives related to transportation, waste, and the environment for long-term sustainable outcomes.
  • Takes initiative in advancing progress towards goals and objectives laid out in RVAGreen 2050 Plan through data collection analysis and reporting.
  • Tracks and analyzes climate action, resiliency, and environmental justice data from various sources and works with the team to create annual reports.
  • Advises the sustainability team on trends in climate resilience and local issues.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to create communication strategies based on analytical findings.
  • Develops ongoing interest in issues of sustainability, racial justice, and technology to inform progress towards RVAgreen.
  • Ability to coordinate, conduct, compute, and analyze data relating to sustainability.
  • Commitment to equity and ability to interpret data with a racial justice lens.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn applications in Microsoft suite, various systems, and software used by the City of Richmond.
  • Willingness and ability to build new systems to effectively store and communicate data internally and externally.
  • Enthusiasm for building relationships with individuals, teams, and communities to create an impact in sustainability.
  • Ability to manage complex information and interpret it to diverse audiences.

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses Job Qualification:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and/or equivalent professional experience.

Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

  • Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently reach and finger; and occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, walk, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may not include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be sedentary, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
