General Description:
The Teacher of Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing ensures each student reaches
their full potential by delivering engaging instruction in the student’s least restrictive
environment (LRE).  The Teacher also works collaboratively with the general education
teacher by modeling strategies and best practices for working with students who are deaf or
hard of hearing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
? Delivers instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in their LRE;
supports students in meeting goals
? Works collaboratively to develop and implement aligned lesson plans in the
appropriate modality (total communication, ASL, aural/oral communication)
? Uses student data to modify instruction as needed
? Serves as the case manager for assigned students across the division, ensuring that
Individual Educational Programs, (IEPs) are developed, implemented and reviewed
according to guidelines
? Works closely with the audiologist on classroom amplification needs, monitoring
current audiograms, and cochlear implant mapping appointments
? Maintains and monitors all specialized equipment including hearing aids, batteries,
and amplification devices
? Engages with colleagues and school leaders in staff and departmental meetings, child
study, eligibility, and reevaluation, and maintains accurate records and minutes from
meetings
? Effectively communicates with families about the progress and needs of their child
? Keeps abreast of research and new techniques in the field
? Performs other related tasks as required

Qualifications:
? Bachelor’s Degree required
? Professional license with endorsement in Special Education-Deaf and Hard of Hearing
PreK-12
? Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in manual, total communication and
oral/aural approaches to the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
? Trained and skilled in American Sign Language (ASL)
? Experience working with students with cochlear implants
? Knowledge of federal and state mandates and requirements as related to the
provision of educational services and supports for students with hearing impairments
? Excellent communication (verbal, written, and presentation) skills
? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and
families
? Effective organizational skills
? Valid Virginia driver's license and willingness to use personal automobile
? Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
