The City of Richmond's Department of Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Technology Coordinator. This role involves providing information technology application, management, and security, as well as implementing user support. The incumbent will perform complex technical support and troubleshooting, and may supervise lower-level technicians.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide technical leadership in repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and tuning of computer and communication systems.
  • Manage hardware and system installations or upgrade projects.
  • Coordinate with vendors for installation and maintenance.
  • Assist and instruct lower-level technicians.
  • Inspect contractor work quality.
  • Develop and provide user training.
  • Maintain system documentation and asset records.
  • Perform data backup and retrieval.
  • Support for dispatch consoles, mobile data, emergency management, and camera administration.
  • Work may include radio programming, camera installations, emergency equipment installations, and inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC and FAA regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform on-call work as needed.

Work Conditions:

  • Availability to work overtime and some weekends as necessary.
  • Designated as Essential Personnel, required to work during public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Training and Experience:

    • Associate's degree in computer science or related field.
    • Three years of maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair experience in the area of assignment.
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science is preferred.
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:

    • Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
    • Must obtain a Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
    • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) preferred, or must obtain within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge:

    • Assembly, installation, and use of Windows-based PCs.
    • General business practices and security policies.
    • Common computer programs like Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Electronic databases, specialized software, and enterprise networking basics.
  • Skills:

    • Analyzing and resolving system-related issues.
    • Assisting with Help Desk calls and customer service.
    • Maintaining equipment and ensuring data integrity.
    • Prioritizing tasks and working with a variety of customers.
  • Abilities:

    • Multi-tasking, organizing, and planning.
    • Analyzing and problem-solving.
    • Working in a team environment.
