The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Traffic Signal Specialist within the Traffic Engineering Division. The selected individual will be responsible for performing technical tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the city's traffic control system. This role requires expertise in traffic signal operations, diagnostics, construction, inspection, and preventative maintenance of traffic signals and related devices. The incumbent will also respond to emergency calls throughout the city to ensure citizen safety, even in extreme weather or hazardous situations.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of traffic signals at intersections
  • Operate related equipment and ensure traffic signals are functioning as expected
  • Respond to emergency repair calls promptly, determining required equipment and tools for quick and safe repairs
  • Conduct inspections of work equipment prior to field assignments
  • Enter completed work information into the City Works system, respond to emails, and fulfill other administrative duties as needed
  • Act as Essential Personnel during declared emergencies and major weather events

Qualifications, Special Certifications, and Licenses: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient knowledge of traffic signal installation, repair, and maintenance
  • Familiarity with devices commonly attached to traffic signals, such as 360 cameras, Iteris cameras, and microwave sensors
  • Competence in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and AutoCAD
  • Understanding of electrical systems and adherence to proper safety procedures
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Skill in directing traffic, setting up barricades, and installing safety signage
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems, including operating a bucket truck
  • Effective problem-solving, prioritization, and oral and written communication skills

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of one (1) year of college education or specialized advanced training (equivalent training will be considered)
  • Two (2) years of related experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience approved by the department may satisfy the minimum qualifications

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (Class B) within 6 months of hire
  • VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Certifications
