Under the supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the clinic's Operational Director, the Clinical Director of the Virginia Telemental Health Initiative (VTMHI) provides clinical leadership for the VTMHI clinic. They oversee and supervise clinical staff, as well as volunteer pre-licensed mental health providers who deliver telemental health services to meet the mental health needs of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Clinical Director ensures compliance with regulations, ethical standards, and licensure requirements, while fostering a compassionate and respectful environment for patients and volunteers. Their goal is to improve access to mental health care for all individuals in need.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaboratively develop clinical policies, procedures, and workflows to support high-quality telemental health care.
- Lead quality assurance activities, including periodic chart reviews, identifying learning opportunities for clinical staff and volunteers, and assisting with evaluation and reporting.
- Design and implement a virtual clinical supervision program to support volunteer pre-licensed mental health providers.
- Provide guidance on technology processes and workflows aligned with best clinical practices and user experience.
Additional Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide individual and/or group supervision for a cohort of pre-licensed volunteers (approximately 8 hours per week).
- Offer consultation and guidance to clinical supervisors, licensed volunteers, and pre-licensed volunteers (supervisees) as needed.
- Monitor treatment provided, conduct periodic chart reviews, and make recommendations for improvement and changes.
- Support Clinical Supervisors in enhancing their supervisory skills to ensure quality virtual supervision.
- Assist in planning and delivering education to supervisees through webinars, didactic sessions, or written materials.
- Support promotional activities with professional associations and other opportunities for networking and recruiting volunteers, supervisors, and pre-licensed providers.
- Collaborate with organizational leadership to define and review clinical policies and workflows for high-quality care.
- Contribute to quality improvement efforts by evaluating processes, identifying program needs, and implementing changes.
- Advise on technology implementation, workflow, and processes, including electronic medical records and telehealth platforms.
- Stay updated on current literature, regulations, and research in mental health care, telehealth practice, and clinical tele-supervision.
- Adhere to VTMHI and free and charitable clinic guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Comply with professional licensing requirements and ethical standards, including maintaining required supervision CE hours.
- Participate in administrative, supervisory, staff, and team meetings.
About VTN/VTMHI: The Virginia Telemental Health Initiative (VTMHI) is a pilot program aimed at expanding access to telemental health services for medically underserved, low-income individuals in Virginia who are uninsured or underinsured. VTMHI collaborates with behavioral and mental health professionals to help them meet their licensure requirements. The program provides education, support, and supervision to pre-licensed professionals while offering pro-bono support in free and charitable clinics. Additionally, VTMHI offers training and educational resources on telehealth to prepare future providers to meet the mental health needs of Virginians.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, or PhD in Psychology.
- Active licensure as an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or LCP in good standing with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Minimum of five years' direct care practice experience, including working with adults, couples, and groups.
- Minimum of three years' experience supervising pre-licensed providers; preference for experience with volunteers.
- Strong ability to collaborate as a supervisor and colleague with licensed mental health care providers.
- Professional connection to an academic institution preferred.
- Familiarity with free and charitable clinics and/or the medically underserved population is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including training/presentation and coaching experience.
- Strong clinical knowledge, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to give and receive feedback and constructive criticism, as well as resolve conflicts.
- Experience in telemental health therapy and/or supervision.
- Willingness to work as part of a virtual team, maintain open communication with clinical and program staff, and seek support when needed.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including electronic health records and telehealth platforms.
- Knowledge and sensitivity to anti-racism, social justice, and cultural differences, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse individuals and groups.
